Bulgarian Easter

St Varvara


St. Varvara is celebrated on 4th of December. She is the protector from disease and especially the smallpox. On this day Bulgarian women avoid work. The lunch they prepare is similar as the St Andrew's day, but they sweetened the dishes with honey.

1st of March


On the first day of March and few days afterwards, Bulgarians exchange and wear white and red tassels or small dolls called "Пижо и Пенда" (Pizho and Penda). In Bulgarian folklore the name Baba Marta (in Bulgarian баба Марта meaning Grandma March) is related to a grumpy old lady whose mood swings change very rapidly.

St Dimitar`s Day


The Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates on 26 October the day of St Dimitar. Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians and Russians argue about being the protected people of the Saint. It is believed that St Dimitar was a proconsul in Salonika and died for the Christian Faith on 26 October 306.

St Catherine


 In the end of November we celebrate the day of St Catherine. The date is 24 November and those who celebrate aren`t just the name bearers (Ekaterina, Katya, Tinka, Katerina, Katina, Tina, Katrin), but all orthodox Christians. On this day, women are supposed to make white bread with honey on top. This bread is given away – a tradition that is supposed to bring health in the house. According to myths, St Catherine looked after Christians and protected them from all seasonal diseases.

Happy Granny Marta’s Day!


Bulgarian tradition celebrates the 1st of March as Granny Marta’s Day. On that day we believe the winter steps away and the new boosting spring life starts. Everyone gets a decoration, made of white and red thread - either as a bracelet around the left wrist or an ornament to pin on the lapel, mainly pom-poms or the small figurines of a boy and a girl in something like the traditional Bulgarian costumes.
