Uhlovitsa cave is located at 1040 m altitude, 3 km northeast of Mogilitsa, in the border zone in the western part of the Rhodope massif. Legend says the name comes from the night bird of prey - the owl (“ululitsa” in Bulgarian).
It is one of the oldest caves in the region and it ends with seven incredibly beautiful lakes that during the early spring are filled with water. Ambient temperature is 10-11 degrees Celsius all year round.
Credit for the discovery of Uhlovitsa in 1967, and most of the caves in this region, goes to Dimitar and Georgi Raychevi, father and son - amateur cavers.
The cave is 460 meters long, of which 330 are suited for visitors. The cave is really beautiful. It is also a product of the complex geological history of these lands. It is known that caves are the result of chemical action of water on carbonate rocks - limestone, marble, dolomite. Aggressive water soluble calcium carbonate rocks to form caves and other karst forms. Under certain conditions, the carbonate re-crystallizes to form stalactites, stalagmites, stalactons and cave pearls. They are beautiful and fragile shapes, due to the very slow process of forming that sometimes exceed a few million years duration.
On the second floor of the cave is located the "Hall of the abyss." Four bottomless holes are leading to the hall downstairs, the most beautiful one in the cave. The Uhlovitsa cave is famous among the cavers for its beautiful waterfalls and interesting rock forms as the dendritic formations that resemble sea coral. At the end of the cave is the ice “White waterfall”. For centuries, nature has sculpted a true tale of corallites and helicates in this cave.
