The fortress was built over the ruins of ancient settlements, the oldest one dating back to the 4th millennium BC. In the early middle ages, the region hosted the main town of the Roman district Lower Moesia. In the 9th century, the ruins were used as the foundation for the building of the Bulgarian fortress.

Today, visitors can see the remains of the upper town citadel, where the king’s palace was positioned. It had its throne hall, patriarchate and patriarch’s residence. An architecture museum is set on the hill. Well informed guides can walk you among the ruins and tell you more about Bulgarian history.

If you decide to stay in Veliko Turnovo over night, you could be lucky to enjoy the magnificent sound and light show. Color spotlights illuminate the remains and the music contributes to feeling the magnificence of the ancient Bulgarian history.
