The monastery "St. Trinity" is also known as "Varovitets". It is located 5 km northeast of Etropole in a beautiful area with old trees, river and a waterfall. The monastery was founded in XII century, according to some reports in 1158. In 1858 the old church was demolished and construction began on the new, which is still preserved.
According to a legend, St. Ivan Rilski lived in one of the caves in the nearby area Varovitets. Locals declared the area a holy place and built a monastery there. The name "Varovitets" probably comes from the rocky soil in the area under the Cherni Vrah in Stara Planina Mountain, where the building is located.
At the end of the sixteenth and especially in the seventeenth century at the Etropole monastery "Varovitets" occurs and is attested by numerous monuments, literary, educational, artistic and calligraphic painting school which became the most important cultural and educational center in northern Bulgaria. Here were copied and decorated a number of liturgical books (about 76 volumes stored in different places - National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" in Sofia, the National Church Museum etc.). Calligraphers and writers created their own style called Etropolski poluustav calligraphy.
At the monastery in the XVI-XVII century worked iconographic studio with preserved until today over 30 icons. Among them is the patronal icon "St. Trinity" - the first known medieval icon in Bulgaria, signed by its author, the painter Nedyalko from Lovech. The icon was dated to 1598.
The church in the Etropole monastery isn’t decorated with murals, but in contrast, there are preserved a number of interesting icons of the old church. Since the end of the seventeenth century are dated the icons "Jesus Christ Pantokrator" "John the Baptist with legends" and "Mary with the prophets". At the icons are displayed and the Bulgarian saints Ivan Rilski, Prohor Pchinski, Dimitri of Osogovo and others.
The monastery complex was restored in the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century. In 1977, a museum opened in the monastery - a branch of the Historical Museum of Etropole, and in 1992 it was renovated. Visitors can see the hiding in the monastery, made by Abbot Hrisant for Vasil Levski. In the "Etropolska literary school" Hall the visitors can see authentic copies of manuscripts that present the activities of the monks.
Near the monastery is located the Varovitets waterfall that will delight visitors with its serenity and natural beauty.
