The first winter holiday is 30th of November - St. Andrew's day. He was the first among the Apostles that followed Christ.
It is believed that from this day, the days begin to grow, little more each day as a grain. Grain is associated with ritual practice on the eve of this holiday. Bulgarians boil in a new pot different grains - wheat, peas, corn, beans, lentils, etc.. to enlarge them. In the morning they take them and throw them in the fireplace – upward direction so the crop will grow high and large. A special tribute on this day are young brides, they are to fall thr ritual of throwing boiling seeds first, so they conceive fast as fast is the grain growing.
According to the popular belief Saint Andrew’s day is called also the Bears day. Legend says that St. Andrew was the only one without a name holiday from the Apostles. He astride a bear and went to God. God said, "Whoever does not celebrate your name day, to ride your horse. “Therefore, on 30th of November in certain regions of Bulgaria they boil the corn and through it through the chimney, and cried: "Take that, you Bear, take the boiled grain and don’t eat the crop and men."
Edreevden ( day when the days start to become longer ) is called somewhere, and they believed this is the day when the sun starts moving . People's hope for a light freshness and enlights the souls of people.
