St Varvara

St. Varvara is celebrated on 4th of December. She is the protector from disease and especially the smallpox. On this day Bulgarian women avoid work. The lunch they prepare is similar as the St Andrew's day, but they sweetened the dishes with honey. This they give to children. They bake cakes and small, spread with honey, molasses, jam or melted sugar and give to neighbors and passers-by.
Saint Varvara was born in a wealthy family in Iliopol. Her father kept her closed and isolated from the world in a tower and he educated her in pagan spirit. Alexandrian priest devoted her and  baptized her in the Christian faith. She started to promote it. Her father returned from a trip, and understood about her new religious views and got angry with her. He gave her to Marcius. He denied her as a daughter. Marcius sentenced her to death and the father of St.Varvara executed her. On the same day he and Marcius were struck by lightning.
This days the remains of St. Varvara are located in Kiev, some of them are in Sofia's Church" Sv. Preobrajenie" in Lozenets.
