Snezhanka (meaning Snow White in English) is a cave in the Rodopi mountains, situated about 3 miles away from the town of Peshetra. The cave was discovered in 1961 by a group of mountaineers who spent about 10 hours inside it just admiring its beauty. Snezhanka is somewhat difficult to access as visitors will have to walk a steep path for about 45 minutes before reaching the cave, however, your efforts will be worthwhile as the interior of the cave is truly captivating.
The cave is relatively small- it is less than 500 ft long with a constant temperature of about 42.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The cave hosts one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful ice formations- there are a lot of stalagmites, stalactites, stalactones, stone draperies and sinter lakes. The largest stalactite is a little over 4 ft long. There are several galleries in the cave- The Hall of Udders, the Great Hall, the Music Hall and the Landslip. In the Magical hall made of white crystal sinter, there is a natural formation which resembles the fairy-tale character Snow White- hence the name of the cave. There is a 82-fееt long secret passage where calcium formations resemble frozen rain. The passage leads to the Hall of Beards. The hall is called this way because there are brown “beards” hanging from the ceiling. In fact, these are the roots of century-old beech trees growing above the cave.
In the middle of the cave there are traces of fire, animal bones and pieces of pottery dating back from the early Iron age. These indications show that the cave was used by Thracians as shelter.
The cave is one of Bulgaria’s Top 100 Tourist Destinations and works every day from 9AM to 5:15PM in the summertime and from 10AM to 4PM in the winter.
