Snejanka Cave

Snejanka Cave is rightly called one of the most beautiful caves in Bulgaria. Its beauty is due to the snow-white marble grain through which the river Novomahlenska flowed for more than three million years.

Hence the name of the cave. In the so-called Magic Room, including fine sinter formations and lakes, the eye easily distinguishes the figure of Snow White (“Snejanka” in Bulgarian), its canopy bed and other parts of the beloved fairy tale, created as if from a fairy snow white matter.

Inside you can see some of the most beautiful cave shapes in Bulgaria. Undoubtedly, the mood gets improved with signs such as "Slower", "Do not give up", "Stop and get some rest" and others.

There are several suggestions on the origin of the name and the nearby town Peshtera (“Cave” in Bulgarian), but prevails the opinion that the reason for this name probably are the caves Snow White and Jubileyna. The findings there show that in the Bronze Age the caves were inhabited and that the emergence of a village in the Peshtera valley happened sometime in the second half of the IV century BC. Many testimonies are left over from the times when the three ethnic groups of Slavs, Thracians and Bulgarians lived in the region - not only bridges, roads and ruins of castles, but sarcophagi, religious objects, tools, ornaments and weapons.

Snow White is one of the smaller caves in Bulgaria, but it is very rich in stalactites (the largest has a length of 1.30 m), stalagmites, and draperies. The five sinter lakes where you can see cave pearls give special charm to the place. In the middle of the cave there are circular hearths, where objects from the Early Iron Age and animal bones were found. There are suggestions that the Thracian tribe of Bessi were using the cave as a refuge.

This magnificent cave located in Batak Mountain, was discovered by accident on January 3, 1961 by three climbers from the tour company "Koupena". They entered the cave early in the morning and didn’t left it until the evening, captivated by its beauty. That same year the cave was studied by specialists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. One of them named it "Snow White". The cave was opened for tourist visits in 1968.

In its main axis the cave is only 145 meters long and occupies area of only 3150 square meters, but it is extremely beautiful. One of the most interesting room bears the intriguing name "Hall of udders." The Magic hall has stalactites, which can be used to create a melody.

Perhaps most intriguing is the "Hall of beards" from which hang dark brown roots of the old beech trees, that reached the ceiling of the cave through the cracks of the rock.
