Skaklia Waterfall


Skaklia waterfall is situated in the Defile of Iskyr River near the village Gara Bov. It is located around 40 km from the capital city Sofia.

Skaklia is one of the biggest waterfalls in Bulgaria. It consists of two levels. The first one is around 90 meters high and the second one – around 20 meters. In general, its height is 120 meters. From the top there is an incredible view of Vratsa and Vratsa plain. In combination with the falling water from such a big height, the feeling is unique. During the winter Skaklia waterfall freezes and a lot of people use it for ice climbing.

Around the waterfall is situated an eco-path with suitable places for picnic and relaxation. The path bears the name of one of the greatest and most eminent Bulgarian poets – Ivan Vazov. On the top of the waterfall he was inspired by the view and wrote a big number of his works.

Skaklia waterfall is suitable for visits mainly during the summer, but the other seasons also reveal incredible views. The most appropriate way to reach the waterfall is by car. One should travel on the road through the Defile of Iskyr River.
