Sboryanovo

The Historical and archeological reserve "Sboryanovo" is located between the villages Malak Porovetz and Sveshtari in the canyon of Krapinetz river and on the hills around it. The first traces of life in these places are from the late Stone Age and from the beginning of the Copper Age. With the settlement of the Thracian tribes Gettae during the early Iron Age, the region of "Sboryanovo" became a political, cultural and religious center, which began to be built at the beginning of the first millennium BC (IX - VIII century) and reached the highest point of development during the Hellenistic period (IV - III century). During this period the forming the village ended. It had a city center, two mounds, necropolis and two sanctuaries.

In the last quarter of the fourth century BC rulers of the Thracian tribe Gettae based their capital Helis near Sboryanovo. Situated on an area of over 100 acres, the city had a remarkable fortification, and became the residence of king Dromihet. In Helis he accepted the defeated Macedonian ruler Lysimachus.

Studies have found a residential neighborhood. Perhaps there was a dock, where goods have been loaded and unloaded through the navigable river Krapinetz to the Danube and Black Sea. Helis flourished until the mid-third century BC when a powerful earthquake destroyed the city.

Here is one of the most sensational discoveries - the Sveshtari tomb of an unknown ruler, with very beautiful decoration of the central chamber, where there are ten female figures (caryatids) with their hands raised. Above is a scene of worship of the deceased ruler. Massive stone door divides his funeral couch from the eyes of mortals. Second more usual bed was designed for his beloved wife, who was obliged to follow the deceased in life after death. In the lobby and in one of the side chambers were buried his horses.

The remarkable architecture and decoration of the tomb are the reason UNESCO take the tomb under its protection in 1985.

One of the most important places within the "Sboryanovo" is the Demir Baba Teke. It is sacred to the Aliani, called "Casalbashi". They believe that the temple was built in XVI century in honor of their spiritual leader Demir Baba (the Iron Father). Christians also worship Demir Baba as a saint, even since 1927 the dome of the temple has a Christian cross and a Muslim crescent.

In the early first millennium BC on the bare plateau in Kamen Rid near Sboryanovo the Gettae began to offer sacrifices to the sun god. Founded at the dawn of the Iron Age, the sanctuary existed seven centuries. It occupies 47.5 acres, surrounded by stone walls. The only entrance to the sacred territory is from the south. In the northwestern edge of the territory two large stone circles mark the places where the ritual took place. In the first circle is a large stone-built altar. The site can be reached on foot along a wide dirt road running from the parking lot in front of Ahinora hut.

The early medieval settlement in the area Byuven kasaba is an ensemble of carved and half-dug residential, industrial and commercial buildings. Buried part of the structure is lined with stone and the structure above was probably made of wood. The studies have revealed the foundations of the nave of a small chapel, where was found a bronze cross-reliquary. Studies in the region continue shaping the image of early medieval manorfrom the IX-XI century.
