Pomorie is one of the Black Sea resorts in Bulgaria, which attracts with a varied history, excellent beaches and recreation areas. The town has existed since antiquity, but it is famous for its mud baths and salt production, which have made it an important center for centuries.
The Salt Museum in Pomorie is unique not only in Bulgaria and on the Balkans. It is one of the youngest museums in Bulgaria and is really unique and interesting to visit. Created with financial support from the European Union on September 2, 2002, it has an exhibition hall and 25 acres of existing salt mines.
Once salt was called "white gold sea" because it was a symbol of wealth and valuable medium of exchange - it determined the price of slaves, as equated with their weight. From this comes the noun "Salad", which in some Latin dialects literally means "salt". In Europe during the Middle Ages the term "to stand above the salt" was equivalent to conferring a high honor. There are many similar expressions in Bulgarian enshrined even in folk tales and legends. Typical for Bulgaria is the custom to welcome guests with bread and salt.
In Pomorie sea salt comes from a long time. For Anhialo - the ancient city as it was called before - war was waged between the largest poleis in the Black Sea - Mesembria (Nesebar) and Apollonia (Sozopol). Since ancient times the city was famous mostly for its shipping and rich deposits of sea salt.
According to a statement from the salt comes the name of the city: from the Greek "Anhi" - close "als" - salt. Anchialos literally means "village situated near the salt" in greek.
Underlying everything is the Pomorie Lake, which owns and other minerals except salt. The healing properties of firth mud have been known since antiquity. Perhaps this is why the Romans came to think of it as a sacred lake. It is a super-salty lagoon with an area of 850 hectares, separated from the sea with sandy hair and artificial dike. Long is almost seven kilometers wide and two. For the extraction of salt used its northern part, and for mud - south. Great salinity does not mean it is lifeless. The lake is inhabited by plant and animal species adapted to its spetsifchni conditions, but the greatest variety of birds. They can often be seen near the lake because it is one of the most important spring migration routes of birds - Children & Heritage. Since 2001 the lake was declared a protected area since 2002 and is included in the Ramsar Convention as an important ornithological site of world importance.
