Pazardzhik Regional Historical Museum


Regional Historical Museum in Pazardjik was founded in 1911, its main departments store invaluable findings from this region and cover the period from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.

In exposures of the department "Archaeology" visitors can see various examples of material and spiritual culture of Pazardzhik region: a model of housing, Neolithic pottery, idol sculptures, cult objects, ancient, medieval and western coins, weapons, jewelry, and one of the richest votive plates with the famous Thracian horseman.

The most interesting exhibits are from the prehistoric mound near the village Yunatsite and from the Tsepina medieval fortress in the Rhodope Mountains near Dorkovo village. Copies of marble icons of St. Peter and Paul dated in XII - XIII century found in a church in the Tsepina fortress in 1879 are shown in a separate showcase. Their originals are in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Over 120 exhibits, placed in two rooms, represent the Ottoman period and the national liberation struggles. Visitors can also see the model of Kurshum han - the oldest inn in the Balkans, built in the second half of XVI century.

Chronologically displayed artifacts, mostly of stone can be viewed in the museum lapidarium: statues, travel columns, altars, cult figures. There is also epigraphic monuments and architectural elements.

Original exhibits and lots of photographies allow to trace the development of the Pazardjik region during the National Revival and the local participation in the national liberation struggles and in the April uprising in 1876, centered in the Fourth Revolutionary District.

In the last three halls of the museum are exposed the administration, economic and cultural life of Pazardjik liberation from the Liberation to mid-twentieth century.

Ethnographic exhibition is arranged in the largest building in Pazardjik from the National Revival, built in 1850 in the style of Baroque house. The owner Nikola Hristovich was a rich merchant in Pazardzhik. The building was declared a national architectural and artistic monument. Ethnographic exhibition presents the richness and variety of traditional folk culture of Bulgaria, which covers the three Bulgarian ethnographic regions: Thrace, the Rhodopes and Srednogorie. The fund of the department "Ethnography" collected and stored valuable evidence of the livelihood and spiritual culture of Pazardzhik population. There are 15 collections: objects of city life, clothing, tools and craft works, equipment for cultivation and harvesting, architectural details, folk musical instruments, items of folk culture.

Part of the funds of the Regional History Museum is a the monument house of Konstantin Velichkov - an eminent Bulgarian politician involved in building the free Bulgaria. Traditionally, the town hosts an annual celebration called "Velichkovi days" with a rich cultural program.

Regional Historical Museum in Pazardjik is one of the oldest and most famous museums in Bulgaria. It has its own specialized library, restoration workshop and lab.
