Overbooked flights. Refused boarding

During summer travel it is not uncommon for airlines to be overbooked. It is possible that some passengers will be denied boarding. What do you do in such case?
Before passengers are denied boarding on involuntary basis the airlines usually are trying to get more volunteers. The airlines will offer travel vouchers that in some cases can approach $ 1000- in addition to complementary dinner and a hotel room if passengers are forced to stay overnight. Exactly how much you can get depends on the circumstances of the flight. You can also try to get upgrade to business or first class on the next flight.
If it happens to you, ask the boarding agent for compensation for the occurred inconvenience. If you do not do it on the spot you will be simply assumed as voluntary agreed to the change. If you try to get compensation after the travel was completed usually doesn’t have results.
