National Church Museum of History and Archaeology in the Holy Synod is housed in the building of the Theological Faculty of Sofia University. Its story begins after the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878. In 1923 the museum was officially established.
Museum launches and the branch of the National Gallery of old Bulgarian art, which is located in the crypt of the Memorial Church "St. Alexander Nevski".
In 2008, the National Church Museum of History and Archaeology celebrated the 85th anniversary of its foundation. The exhibition area is insufficient for this treasure of the Bulgarian Orthodox culture, which holds over 11 000 artifacts related to the history of Christianity in the country.
The museum presents the Bulgarian Orthodox religious culture and art. Here are stored many manuscripts and early printed books, valuable icons and prints, plates, church antiquities and monuments of Christian art. The museum includes models of some ancient churches, albums with pictures of all the important and impressive religious monuments, manuscripts from Neophit Hilendarski (Bozveli), letters and documents from Ilarion Makariopolski, Antim I and Joseph I, by Bishop Clement of Turnovo and many more.
It has exceptionally rich collection of icons. One of the most valuable exhibits of the museum is the oldest icon found painted in Bulgaria from Sozopol. It is dated from the X century and represents St. George and St. Demetrius on horses. Other valuable icon is the double-sided icon of St. Mary the Pathfinder (Odigitria) of Poganovo.
From the late Middle Ages have been preserved icons of Christ Pantocrator, St. Andrew, St. Clement Ohridski, the Holy Trinity and St. Mary.
Most extensive in quantity is the collection of icons of the National Revival. Here are presented the main schools of Revival iconography with works of their biggest artists: Tryavna’s papa Vitan, Simeon Tsonyuv, Crastiu papa Vitanov, the Samokov masters Dimitar Zograf and Zahari Zograf and others.
Visitors can also see copies of valuable paintings from Bachkovo, the church "St. Forty martyrs "in Veliko Turnovo, the Boyana Church, Zemen monastery, the monasteries in Dragalevtsi and Kremikovtsi, the Troyan Monastery. A gallery of donor portraits is exposed.

National History Museum
The National History Museum was created on May 5, 1973. On March 2, 1984 in honor of a 1 300 anniversary of Bulgaria's foundation the first permanent exhibition was opened in the building of the courthouse. Now the museum is housed in "Boyana" residence.
