Museum of Sport

It is true that the best ambassadors of a country are not always diplomats, but also prominent representatives of culture and sport. To familiarize yourself with some of the glorious moments of the Bulgarian athletes you will need to visit the Museum of Physical Culture and Sport, which today is located in a specially adapted room in the National stadium "Vasil Levski".

The story of its construction lasted several decades. Created in 1956, after several relocations, the museum truly lived up to its official opening on August 27, 2003. Among the guests at the ceremony was the General Director of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura.

The museum was completed through donations from the famous Bulgarian athletes and sports figures such as Krum Doktorski, General Vladimir Stoychev, Yordanka Blagoeva, Diana Yorgova, Svetla Otsetova, Vesela Lecheva and many others. A recent donation was made by the great Bulgarian volleyball player Todor Simov – a true legend from the late 40s and early 50s of the twentieth century.

Over 500 exhibits, photographs and other materials present the first sports associations - travel companies, clubs and organizations. Among the particularly valuable items are a copy of the first Bulgarian bicycle, personal belongings and personal rewards of the great fighters Dan Koloff and Nikola Petrov. Visitors can view authentic fencing suit, which was used at the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928, as well as other sport suits, numerous cups and collection of medals.

Of particular interest is the old photos from 1894, on which can be seen the Swiss gymnastics teachers, arrived in Bulgaria at the invitation of the Minister of Education. They were distributed in schools throughout Bulgaria and actually launched the modern sport in the country.

Special attention is paid to the achievement of the Bulgarian national football team, which ranked fourth in the World Cup in the U.S. in 1994. The world record of Stefka Kostadinova in the high jump discipline by August 30, 1987 is also presented. Her achievement of 209 cm can not yet be overcome.

Museum visitors can get acquainted with many great achievements of Bulgarian athletes in the disciplines of boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, gymnastics and others.
