Museum of Fisheries and Boating


Tutrakan town is renowned for its military Memorial cemetery and for the one of its kind along the Danube Museum of Fisheries and Boating. If you visit the military cemetery, it stirs sadness and in the museum the interest and curiosity of the visitors is attracted by its original expositions.

The Museum of Fisheries and Boating was opened in 1974. It is located in the architectural reserve "Fishing neighborhood" - it is naturally differentiated fishing village of the Revival period with authentic buildings. The place is charming and easily visitors can immerse themselves in the past and understand why, in its millennial existence, Tutrakan was inextricably linked to fishing and boating - an ancient craft and livelihood, of which genera and families made a life during the ages. Its exhibits were collected from the entire Danube.

The exhibition is organized in 7 rooms and 2 interiors in the building - monument of the early twentieth century. In chronological sequence are represented the original gears used in ancient and modern times. There are original fishhooks from bone and copper, harpoons, clay weights for fishing nets, iron sapkani, hook lines, different types of nets, made from plant fibers.

Lots of masters who made boats worked in the city. They exported their goods not only to Romania and Serbia, but also to Austria and Hungary. It is known with certainty that in 1897 the fishing profession was practiced by 2297 people and in the early twentieth century, the neighborhood was inhabited by 1,437 fishing families. Many women were also engaged in fishing. From here, except boats, were exported fish, fish oil and caviar for a number of European countries.

The museum offers a fascinating journey into the past. Visitors will find new information on the hard life of the local population that made living by fishing: their food consisted mainly of mush and fish. Fishermen detained in the town only during the coldest winter days. They went out fishing early in the spring and returned in late autumn. Departing of 150-200 kilometers from their birthplace, hunting fish and selling it, and thus support their families. When the year was bad and hunting - small, mass-starvation among the people was common.

In addition to the life of local fishermen, tourists can get acquainted with the river Danube. In the museum you can learn that the symbol of the river is cod, because its white meat is very tasty and from it is extracted the famous caviar - "the gold" of the Danube fishermen.

Ethnographic Museum Berkovitsa
Berkovitsa was first mentioned in a Turkish document of 1491, but the remains of fortresses and buildings on the hill Kaleto near the town prove that the settlement is much older.
