Museum "Raina Knyaginya"

One of the most visited places in Panagyurishte is the house-museum of Raina Popgeorgieva - main teacher in the girls' school in the city, which was only 20 years old when she sewn the flag of the participants in the April uprising.

The house is several hundred years old but it is now perfectly restored and maintained. It was built back in 1673. In 1856 there was born Raina Popgeorgieva.

On the first floor there was a workshop, but today there is exposed tangible exposure, revealing the life and work of this great woman. The second floor is home to the ethnographic collection, which tells us about the house, customs and atmosphere in the traditional Bulgarian home of XIX century.

The flag of the rebels was consecrated on April 22, 1876. At the request of the citizens of Panagyurishte Raina Popgeorgieva led the solemn procession on horseback, and girded with a sword and revolver.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the April uprising she sewn three new flags - the copies of the original of which two are preserved - in her native house in Panagyurishte and in the Military Museum in Sofia.

Twenty-five days after the defeat of the April Uprising Raina was captured by the Turkish authorities and subjected to severe suffering in the Plovdiv prison. Foreign diplomats rescued her from the gallows. Later she went to Russia, where she studied obstetrics, wrote her autobiography and became guardian of 32 children rescued from Panagyurishte.

After the liberation she became a teacher in Turnovo and married to Vasil Dipchev, Mayor of Panagyurishte. She gave birth to five sons and adopted one child. She worked as a midwife in Orlandovtsi.

In 1950 the house was declared a museum and a cultural monument of national importance. In 1979 - 1981 year it was renovated and in the former shop on the ground floor was opened documentary exhibition, which exposes the flag sewn by Raina. The exhibition is dedicated to the life and the role of Raina Popgeorgieva during the April uprising.

In the yard in front of the house a monument marks the place where she is buried. The museum is open every day from 9 to 17 pm.
