Mount Snejanka

In the heart of the Rhodopes, 260 km from Sofia and 15 km from Smolyan, lies one of the most beautiful and majestic peaks in Bulgaria – Snejanka (“Snow White” in Bulgarian). With its 1926 meters it is the highest peak in Pamporovo. Sunny days here are more than 240, and the climate is mild, which makes the place very suitable for tourism.

The average annual temperature of Mount Snejanka is nine degrees Celsius and the snow cover is 140-150 cm. From the top start many ski slopes.

A curious legend is written by the Roman poet Ovid. Once upon a time Hem and Rhodope were a boy and a girl who were in love. Their love was so strong that they called it divine and dared to compare with the mighty Zeus and Hera. Because of that the ruler of Olympus became angry and punished them severely, making them two mountains - Hemus (Stara Planina) and Rhodope and separating them from each other forever.

This is just one of the legends that envelop the Rhodopes in mysticism. The mountain is a special place and everyone that visited her confirm that there is something ancient and powerful in the Rhodopes. However, today it is an attractive tourist destination for many people throughout the year. At the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, near the resort of Pamporovo, is located Mount Snejanka, which dominates everything around. It isn’t the highest peak of the Rhodope Mountains, but it is perhaps the most attractive. The climate in the central part of the mountain determines prolonged but mild winters with heavy snow that stays until May, and creates excellent conditions for practicing winter sports.

Above all is dominating the 156 meter high TV tower - a true architectural achievement. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower with an elevator. There is a restaurant, from which the visitors can enjoy the beautiful view. From the top of the tower the tourists can see Rila and Pirin, Rhodopes and Stara Planina. With better visibility to the south you can see the Aegean Sea. They say that this region has also negatively ionized air, which affects an extremely positive effect on human health.
