The Monument "Virgin Mary" overlooks the town of Haskovo. In 2003 a huge statue was built of the Youth hill. Set at a 17-foot pedestal, it’s 14 meters high and weighs 80 tons. In 2004 the statue was declared the highest statue of Mary from the book of Guinness Records. Virgin Mary is considered the patron of Haskovo and the statue became a symbol of the city.
The idea of erecting the monument belongs to the mayor of the town - Georgi Ivanov. The monumental work on the creation and erection of the statue was entrusted to Petyo Alexandrov and Nikola Stoyanov.
The huge pedestal below the statue is a chapel. At its entrance is placed the certificate from the Guinness Book, showing the uniqueness of the facility. The entire facility is made of polymer concrete and its overall height exceeds 30 meters.
Inauguration of the monument took place on September 8, 2003. This is the birthday of Mary that is celebrated as the feast of the town since 1993.
