Monastery "Pokrov Bogorodichen"

Nunnery "Pokrov Bogorodichen " was a convent of the Rila Monastery. It was founded in 1772 by a patriotic bulgarian woman - baba Fota - the grandmother of Konstantin Fotinov. After she became a nun in Russia, she donated her house and property to the Rila monastery. Gradually the cloister became an educational and spiritual center. In the mid-nineteenth century there lived more than 100 nuns. In 1837-1839, there was raised an impressive stone church. In the XVIII century there were several convents in the town related to Mount Athos monasteries as Zografski, Hilendarski and Iverski, the Rila Monastery as well as some of the monasteries in the Holy Sepulchre. In these convents stayed taxidiotes - monks who gathered donations for their monasteries. Samokov masters devised a gilded wood carving of the iconostasis. The icons were painted by Dimitar Zograf, but most attention is paid to the fresco of the Virgin Mary in the narthex, the work of Zahari Zograf. Virgin Mary is depicted with extended shroud that protects monks, bishops and princes of the city - donors, among which is the author of the fresco. The church has three naves, separated by two rows of columns connected by arches. The altar has three apses - one of the first representative decisions in the church building during the Revival. From west there is an arcade with open narthex on which rests a large atrium, which opens to the nave with plastic line of the parapet. Its architectural solution is closer to the work of Tryavna and Dryanovo school than Samokov. It is believed that the church is the work of craftsmen Dimitar Sergiov Tryavna. Case of Samokov masters, however, are the golden threads of the iconostasis and the impressive royal doors and the canopy over the Holy seat and other church furniture. The monastery survived due to the production of textiles. An interesting fact is that the nuns presented their products at the International Exposition in Liege in 1905 and at the Statement of Balkan countries in London in 1907 and at the First Bulgarian Agricultural and Industrial Fair in Plovdiv in 1892. Diplomas obtained then can be seen in today's cook-house - the connected to the monastery complex Hadzhistamova house. The monastery library keeps books of the XVII-XIX century that belonged to the monk Seraphim, and some of the relics of St. Sava the Serbian and St. Panteleimon.
