Military Cemetery Tutrakan

Memorial complex "Military Cemetery - 1916" is the largest military cemetery dedicated to the dead soldiers in the wars for national unification of Bulgaria.

In 1913 South Dobrudja was within the Kingdom of Romania. For two years, with French and Belgian military professionals, the romanians built an imposing fortress with 15 fort, earthworks and pitfalls. The massive facility was defended by a impressive garrison - 39 000 soldiers, 150 cannons and dozens of machine-gun nests. The romanian army considered it for impregnable, and Commanding General Aslan called the fortress "my little Verdun."

But on 5 and 6 September 1916 by rapid attack the Bulgarian army under the command of General Kiselov, took it just for 33 hours. In the fightings in Tutrakan were killed over 8000 people and 28,000 Romanian soldiers were captured.

After the epic battle for Tutrakan the military command of the Fourth Infantry Division Preslav solve all killed on the battlefield to be buried at Fort № 6 of the fortification line. In two weeks residents of Tutrakan and the surrounding villages carried the dead soldiers. The Bulgarian soldiers put wooden crosses and the names of the recognized bodies and the unknown were burried in common graves. On September 6, 1917 the first celebration of the heroic battle was organised. In this day fund was established to raise a monument to those killed in the battle.

Memorial was created immediately after the battle, and in 1922 was built a monument-obelisk, on which even today can be read, written in Bulgarian, Romanian, German and Turkish, the following words: "Honour and glory to those who knew how to die heroically for their country". An initiative to build a "walk of fame" was launched. To date 1600 are the names of the characters left their bones inscribed. The noble campaign continues, as it remains to add 600 more names.

In 1940 South Dobrudja was returned to the territory of Bulgaria. In 1942 the wooden crosses were replaced with stone, and the memorial was surrounded by a wooden fence. Restoration of the original memorial was carried out in 1983-1986. In 1996 the Cemetery was completely rebuilt.

Every year on the first Sunday of September commemorative ceremonies are held in the Memorial Complex, which honor the soldiers who died in this epic battle. In 2002 the National Museum of History in Sofia received 2 pieces of cannon howitzers Krupp, which are exposed on concrete pedestals and participate as a compositional element in the park area immediately in front of the memorial.

A platform for public holidays was built. It is an important element of overall development and landscaping of the area - it stood for official guests of the celebrations, commemorative parades, musical, literature and other programs directly related to the celebrations.
