The monumental tomb near the village Mezek was built in the sixth century BC. The construction is the so-called "dry masonry", i.e. - without mortar. Overall length of the tomb is almost 30 meters. Scientists have found that it was used repeatedly (not less than four times) and that there were buried noble representatives of the Thracian aristocracy.
Mezek is a small village near Haskovo, which was founded more than 2000 years ago when it was called Mouzak.
Mezek tomb is located about 10 km from Svilengrad. Considered to be the largest and one of the most interesting and impressive domed tombs of Mycenaean type in Thrace, it ss completely preserved in its original form. It is distinguished by its unusual architecture - consisting of one round and two rectangular chambers.
Evidence of the noble Thracian burials in the tomb were the discovered gold jewelry, earrings, necklaces and applications, objects of iron, glass and clay. The tomb was accidentally discovered by a shepherd who was herding on the hill, where was hidden the facility. When leaning on his crook, it suddenly collapsed down. The archeologists excavated the site and found the entrance of the tomb.
When you go through the metal door of the Thracian tomb you will initially fall into a narrow corridor, built of huge stone slabs. Above you remains well-preserved triangular arch. The corridor leads to two consecutive halls, and then it comes to basic premises. In this part of the tomb you can see the stone beds and urns, which are also quite well preserved.
Also in the village of Mezek the visitors will find the best-preserved medieval fortress in the Eastern Rhodopes. It is believed that was built in the end of XI century and in the beginning of XII century during the reign of Alexios I Komnenos. You'll be amazed how impressive is the structure built of crushed stones cemented with mortar.
It had the functions of a castle and a permanent camp of troops. To protect the castle were built nine towers, five of which on the southern, more vulnerable side. Unfortunately in 1900 many stones were taken from the walls for the construction of the Turkish barracks in Svilengrad. Today the castle is restored and declared a historical monument of national importance.
In 2008 the village Mezek was declared eco village and its inhabitants refused to use plastic bags. In 2009 the village got a gold stamp as “unique European settlement”, awarded by the "Official representation of the unique places in Europe" and "European forum of experts".
