Malko Tarnovo

Malko Tarnovo is a small town in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located near the beautiful mountain Strandja, which impresses with its wild and unspoiled nature.

Do you know where you can see one of the most attractive museum exhibitions in Bulgaria? In Malko Tarnovo. The idea of the museum there is extremely successful and causes great interest among visitors, especially children.

Interestingly, in the historical museum, established in 1983, the expositions doesn’t follow chronologically the history, not by going back to antiquity, and focuses on events and customs typical for this region.

Today the museum has lapidarium and five exposure rooms of which the most original is "Nature" in which in an interactive way (through pictures, videos, games, sounds and flavors) are shown the natural resources and the biodiversity of Strandja. By dialing a number from the phone-hollow you can not only hear "voices" of some of the 43 kinds of birds living in the Strandja mountain, but also to learn many details about their habits. And not just for birds. It is a great way to the young visitors to understand the importance of conservation of each of the presented animal and plant species. In the so-called "dark room" where not every child dares to enter, you can detect sounds that issue the nocturnal inhabitants of the forest, the wind and the river flow. In an open chest are arranged "treasures" - small bags filled with herbs that should be recognized by their fragrance. The museum has many clever ideas.

In the exhibition "Archaeology" can be seen many ornaments of bronze, silver and gold, ceramic and glassware, marble gravestones, sacrificial altars and columns, beautiful marble statue of a Roman girl and finds of Thracian domed tombs.

In "Modern and Contemporary History" is presented the history of the national liberation struggle, weapons, icons, in which the predominant color is dark green - the work of local artisans, books, and in "Ethnography" can be seen beautiful fabrics and jewelry, tools and household items for the local population by the end of XIX to the middle of XX century.

One of the most sacred places in the area of Strandja is Petrova Niva, 20 km from Malko Tarnovo. It was there on June 11, 1903, when 47 delegates to the congress of the Internal Revolutionary Organization of Bulgarian Thrace vote taken the historic decision to support earlier burst Ilinden Uprising in Macedonia. 26 days revolutionaries fought a 40 000 Turkish army and Turkish local volunteers. The uprising was suppressed with great brutality, thousands of people were killed, more than 60 villages - burned. Survivors left the homeland and seek refuge in the free Bulgaria.

To perpetuate the memory of the sacrifice of the rebels and their pursuit of national liberation on August 16, 1958 at Petrova Niva a monument was opened, and in 2003 was built the church "St. Petka ". Museum exhibition recalls the heroic events through numerous photos, documents and exhibits, and each year there is held a commemorative National Council.

In Malko Tarnovo region there are numerous archaeological finds, tied with the Thracians. The most famous of them was discovered in "Propada" area - ancient necropolis consisting of 40 burial mounds. Impressive is the Thracian tomb in "Mishkova levels."
