Lovech Ethnographic Museum

If you choose to visit Lovech, you should look at the ethnographic complex. It is located in Varosha, on a quiet cobblestone street, a little above it has proudly stood the medieval citadel "Hisar". The ethnographic complex consists of two neighboring houses – Drasova house and Rashova house.

Drasova house was built in the first half of the nineteenth century. After the first step through the doorstep, you will admire the mix of Oriental Europe. Museum exhibition recreates the life of a wealthy merchant family during this period. Its mixture of styles is fascinating and can be seen in the layout of the house. In the kitchen you will see three-legged chairs and coffee table, chest and "sarak" (bookshelf) on which are arranged shiny and colorful cups and a box of "Cocoa - Milka" brought all the way from Austria.

Here you can see the typical for the Balkan region stove "Jamal". It is designed to be fired from one room and to warm two. In the Hall you can see the same mix of European and Oriental style - the couch, covered with rugs, chairs are Viennese furniture and - most interestingly - Russian samovar.

The bedroom is very interesting, which is in typical National Revival style. It has only one large bed, on which slept 7 to 27 people. Especially for young ladies the bridal room will represent interests. It is fully furnished with Viennese furniture and the china on the shelf is German. You can see a typical wedding dress and the oriental slippers of the bride.

Typical Lovech houses from this period are built with the large terraces called "Kioshkove". In summer the whole family slept outside on the terrace.

If you have not seen a typical National Revival basement, the Ethnographic Museum in Lovech have something to show you. Drasova house has great authentic basement with huge oak doors. Inside it you can find a strange vessel named lynn. In it the grapes were added and only men were able to crush it barefoot. In the basement there are huge wine barrels, weights and baskets.
