Koprivshtitsa is a small town near Sofia, famous for its history and architecture. The town has preserved its Revival appearance, and because of that is declared an architectural and historical museum.
Besides its rich history, Koprivshtitsa impresses visitors with its beautiful scenery. The city is located 1,000 meters above sea level, in the picturesque valley of the river Topolnitsa at the foot of Sredna Gora mountain.
There are several legends about the creation of the city. According to one of these the old roads connecting the towns Zlatitsa, Pirdop and Klisura with Strelcha and Panagurishte crossed point of today's town. This is where a family settled and gradually grew the present town of Koprivshtitsa (before it was called Koprishnitsa). Another legend tells of a young woman brought to the site of today Koprivshtitsa as the area seemed suitable for livestock. She went to the Turkish Sultan and received from him the right to rule the region (in Turkish Koprivshtitsa was called "Avratalan" - "female fields"). There are also suggestions that the city arose after the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule, when here settled many refugees.
Koprivshtitsa is a treasury of Bulgarian Revival architecture. It was declared a city-museum (1952), an architectural and historical reserve (1971). In 1978 it was recognized as a settlement of domestic and international tourism. For tourists Koprivshtitsa is a veritable paradise. The territory of the small town hides many sights, mostly related to the history of Bulgaria and the National Revival period.
Several architectural and historic houses are located in Koprivshtitsa: the museums of the writer Lyuben Karavelov, the poet Dimcho Debelyanov, the revolutionaries Todor Kableshkov, Georgi Benkovski, Nencho Oslekov, Petko Lyutov.

It is difficult for one day to visit all houses, museums and sights in the town. The greatest attention should be paid to the traditional architecture that impresses with its elegance and beauty. In that town could be considered distinctive Revival architecture of some of the best preserved and richly decorated homes of the era: Stariradeva house, Pavlikyanska house, Doganova house, Mlachkova house, Markova house and Chalakova house.
