Kom Peak

It can be argued that you know the region of Berkovitsa if you do not climb to 2016 m high Kom Peak, the fourth highest in the western part of Stara Planina. The peak is known as the Great Kom.

From the peak starts one of the most popular hiking tours in Stara planina (the Bulgarian section of the European route E-3), which ends on the Black Sea’s cape Emine. The peak’s neighbor in the east is Sreden Kom peak (Middle Kom) - 1985 meters in height and Malak Kom (Small Kom) - 1959 m. The northern slopes are covered with coniferous forests, while others are vast grasslands.

Kom-Emine route was first traveled in 1933 by Pavel Delidarev. The transition has a length of more than 700 km. The first successful winter transition takes place in 1961. In 1991 the route became part of the European route E-3, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea. The route takes about 20-30 days. The record is only 7 days, set in 1994.

Kom is not difficult to climb and is appealing for keen hikers and nature lovers. There are several routes getting to the peak. The first starts from the hut, "Kom-nova", which is 15 km away from Berkovitsa. The distance takes about two and half hours. Near it is the so-called Vazov stone where the poet loved to take a rest and watch the landscape. The second route starts at the Petrohan pass and takes about an hour and a half to climb to Kom. The road is part of the Kom-Emine route, which departs at Little Kom Peak. The road from Komshtitsa village leads to the top through old path along the peak’s southern slope. The transition takes about three hours. From the village Gintsi you can also reache peak Kom, taking the path to the hut "Malina". Next to the hut lies a route to the north which reaches the southern slope of the peak. The transition takes three hours.

The biggest reward after climbing to the top are the breathtaking beautiful views that unfold in all directions. There you will meet with bas-relief image of the great Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov and one of his poem "Na Kom", written in 1880 and dedicated to the peak.
