Kolyo Ficheto Museum


Dryanovo is a small town near Gabrovo and Sevlievo, which is known primarily with the region's ancient history and the museum of the famous Bulgarian builder Nikola Ivanov Fichev - Kolyo Ficheto.

Near Dryanovo there are many historical sites. In the "Bacho Kiro" cave were found the oldest traces of primitive cultures in the Balkans, near the town there are ruins of a Thracian settlement. Another landmark is the Roman fortress Diskoduratera. The city was probably a medieval fortress belonging to a boyar or one of the kings of the Assen dynasty.

But the biggest attraction in the town is the Museum of Nikola Ficheto. This architectural and sculptural complex is situated at the beginning of the quarter Giley. The quarter s. On the first floor you can see tools, construction documents and models of home and church carvings associated with the activity of the famous builder. The attention, however, is paid mainly to the models, archival photographs and the drawings of his most remarkable works, which are difficult even to list. Only in his hometown there are few: "St. Nicolas" church, built in 1851. Today it still impresses with its size and architectural design, multiple dwellings. Kolyo Ficheto also built in his hometown numerous houses of which now it is preserved only theIkonomova house. The stone bridge over the River Dryanovska is another masterpiece of the builder.

Other notable works by the master are the churches "St. Nicholas" and " St. St. Constantine and Elena" in Tarnovo, "St. Trinity" in Svishtov, numerous bridges, and especially the famous bridge on Yantra River in the town of Byala.

At the museum you can trace the family tree of the famous master. General Ivan Fichev, one of the first Bulgarian generals and commander during the Serbo-Bulgarian War, is his grandson.

There is a legend about master Nikola Fichev. After finishing the construction of a new bridge, he layed beneath it, while the people crossed the bridge, to ensure their security with his own life.

The exposition, dedicated to Nikola Ficheto, opened in 1969 to celebrate 170 years since his birth. Nichola Fichev was born in Dryanovo in 1800. He studied carpentry and masonry. He moved to live in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. Throughout his life, he deals with the construction of churches, bridges and houses. Many of his works are still preserved, and are now declared as architectural monuments. The Museum "Nikola Ficheto" was restored in 2010.
