Kavarna is situated on the northern coast of the Black Sea. Besides being considered a rock and roll capital of Bulgaria, the city is connected with many legends.
In times when Gods lived together with people, an ancient Greek galley headed on an extremely dangerous journey. Its captain was a famous hero named Jason. He was sent by the usurper Pelias on an impossible task to get the Golden Fleece, and sailed Georgia.
In the waters near Kavarna lies one of the proofs that the ancient Greeks have reached as far north with their galleries. In 1973, near Cape Kaliakra was found a metal ingot in the form of stretched cowhide. For the archaeologists, it is considered a means of exchange, but historians consider it proof of how far to the north the Greek trade relations were stretched even 4000 years ago.
Most of the legends associated with the area, have a tragic ending. Many of them are linked with Cape Kaliakra. Its name means "good bank" in Greek.
It is known that during the I century AD Romans conquered the lands of the Thracians, and named the cape Acros Castelum. Approaches to land were protected by three lines of walls. Slavs based the settlement Karvuna near the roman military castrum. The fortress existed for more than twelve centuries under Byzantine and Bulgarian rule. Kavarna or Karvuna as it was known during the Middle Ages became a major culture center during the rule of despot Balik and despot Dobrotitsa who became independent ruler of Dobrudja in the time of Tsar Ivan Shishman. Despot Dobrotitsa was the third most powerful ruler in Bulgaria and his capital was Karvuna. At the end of the fourteenth century, after fierce battles, the fortress was conquered by the Turks. So was born the legend of forty Bulgarian girls who chose to jump from the sheer cliffs of the cape rather than be captured by the attackers.
Cape Kaliakra is going 2km into the sea and this is the reason for the existence of another legend. Saint Nicholas - the patron of sailors and fishermen, fled from Turks. Running along the shore, the earth itself tried to help him and stretch out to the sea to give him time to escape. However, he was captured and killed. So at the very end of the cape there is a small chapel, which bears the name of the saint.
Kaliakra was used as a port since ancient times. So there is the legend that somewhere in these lands is buried the undiscovered treasure of Lysimachus - one of the generals of Alexander the Great.
Nobody knows if these legends are based on real historical events, but they definitely give a fascinating and magical feeling to Kavarna. It is complemented by the beautiful scenery of the area - the high bank and the red rocks that hide small caves, tranquil beaches and the booming Black Sea, they all are part of these ancient legends.
While in the area, you can also visit the church "St. George", built in 1836, as well as the Historical and the Ethnographic museums. Nearby is the national archaeological reserve "Yailata" - the unique cave city in Bulgaria more than 7000 years old.
