Jordan Yovkov Memorial

Jordan Yovkov is one of the most popular Bulgarian writers, known as the master of the short story and is now recognized as a classic of the Bulgarian literature. Passing over Dobrich, one can see the building dedicated to Yovkov. It is easy to fool, but in fact the eminent writer was born in Zheravna.

However, there are lots of things connecting him with Dobrudja where he lived during most of his life. Dobrudja also gave him inspiration for some of his most important works, such as "Nights at the Antimovo Inn", "Balkan Legends", "If they could talk" and "The farm near the border."

The Memorial House was opened mostly thanks to Despina - the wife of the writer, and to her relatives, which make numerous donations and on November 28, 1980, on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of Yovkov, the museum accepted its first guests. The museum is a unique center dedicated to the life and work of Jordan Yovkov. It keeps over 10,000 exhibits related to the personality of the famous artist. At the front of the museum there is a statue of Yovkov.

Visitors have the opportunity to see the birth certificate of the writer. Many books, pictures and documents tell the story of his youth when he was a teacher in Dobrudja. From this period date his first poetry and fiction attempts. At the museum can be seen some original handwritings and first editions of his masterworks.

In the writer's office Yovkov has maintained its presence. The atmosphere recalls the 30s of the XX century. On the wall is hung an idyllic picture: Yovkov’s father Stefan, sitting outside his house in the village Chifutkyoy, staring at the Dobrudja plain. Exposed are the personal belongings of the writer, numerous handwritten pages of his personal typewriter, as well as translations of his works in over 40 languages including Arabic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Persian, Polish, Finnish, Hindi, Swedish, Japanese and many others.

Unfortunately, the last ten years of the life of the writer were not only filled with creative work, but also with exhausting tension that undermined his power. Terminally ill in the autumn of 1937 he left for treatment in Hissar. But his condition deteriorated. He was operated in the Catholic Hospital in Plovdiv, but the doctors failed to save him. His funeral in Sofia turned into a public funeral march, which expresses the people's love and appreciation for his personality.

Of particular interest to tourists is a remarkable work of art by Stoimen Stoilov placed at the Memorial House - 'In the world of Yovkov heroes ", a painted ceramics.

On entering the Jordan Yovkov monument, visitors can read the lines written by the writer: "In all my work my thought was in Dobrudja. There is my landscape, there are my heroes. I, with all my memories and all my heart, I belong to Dobrudja ". This is precisely the reason for building the museum at Dobrich.
