Ivan Vazov - the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature was born on July 9, 1850 in Sopot in the old house of  his kind built in the XVIII century by his grandfather. It was burned in July 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War.

In 1920, the eve of the anniversary celebrations to commemorate the 70th anniversary and 50 years of literary activity of Vazov, among the poet's friendship in Sofia started the idea to restore his native home.

The construction of the house began in 1931. The interior was designed under the leadership of Stefan Kostov - the Director of the Ethnographic Museum in Sofia. It was based on information from the Vazov brothers and Vala-Vazova Fetvadzhieva. As a source for the reconstruction of the interior was used Vazov’s works, especially his novel "Under the Yoke". In one of the rooms of the house with the idea of St. Kostov, the Ethnographic Museum in Sofia restored the Barbershop of Hadji Ahil – one of the Vazov’s colorful characters of the story "Hadji Ahil' and his novel "Chichovtsi" (“Uncles”). On June 6, 1935 the house was officially opened as a museum. In 1964, the house-museum "Ivan Vazov" in Sopot was declared a cultural monument with national importance. The exhibited manuscripts present his rich literary works created in 1876-1877, when he was a refugee in Romania and published his first poetry works.
