Silistra is the successor of the ancient Roman city Durostorum founded in 29 AD. Before it in this place there was a Thracian settlement. In V century after the invasions of Goths, Huns, Avars, Slavs and Bulgarians, the city decayed. It experienced new boom during the Middle Ages under the name Drustar. After the conquest by the Turks, the city was heavily fortified. In 1877 it was liberated by Russian troops and returned to Bulgaria, but after the Second Balkan War it went into the territory of Romania. In 1940 Silistra again returned to Bulgaria. If a person wants to know more about the rich history of the city, the best place is the local history museum - one of the oldest in Bulgaria.
It is housed in the restored fortress of Silistra and has more than 60,000 exhibits and keeps wealth not only of national but of world importance. In 1976 was created the archeological reserve "Durostorum – Silistra”, whose borders are now 90 percent of the territory of the modern city.
In the museum’s exposures you can see unique exhibits: a Roman stone sundial, roman sports helmet-mask depicted with griffins, precious metals from various eras, the chariot from the burial of a noble Roman magistrate by the end of the III century, a statue of roman woman made in Durostorum, a gold ring that belonged to one of the first Christians in the city, collections of jewelry from III - IV and XIII - XIV century, stamps of Bulgarian and Byzantine rulers and aristocrats, gold jewelry, coin collections and treasures from the IV century BC to the XV century AD, one of the largest collections of medieval crosses, original tools, costumes, kukeri’s masks from the region and many other exhibits.
Most famous in the country and abroad is Durostorum ancient monument is undoubtedly the tomb with murals of a senior dignitary - the patrician Flavius Aetius born here around 380 AD, raised to the consul service and the commandment of the Roman armies, called by the ancient chroniclers "the last Roman". It is the same Flavius Aetius that defeated Attila the Hun at the Catalaunian Plains.
The rich murals of the tomb (geometric, animal and human figures, hunting scenes, a couple and their attendants) have the characteristics of the art from the rule of emperor Constantin the Great and perceived style of a gifted artist, which probably came from the eastern provinces of the Empire (probably Egypt or Syria). On the central panel is depicted the master of the tomb wearing a costume of a noble Roman general - magistrate, perhaps patrician who holds a diploma in hand. Beside him is his noble wife, and both parties are directed to the servants who served the elements of costume of the lord magistrate.
About 10 km southeast of Silistra on the picturesque river bed scapular Small Kanogyol (Taban) close to the villages Strelkovo, Vasil Levski, Pop Rusanovo and Kutlovitsa is located a Thracian cult complex, which includes 4 rock sanctuaries. The central shrine called "Badzhaliyata" is located in a picturesque canyon. The rock temple is shaped in a large cave, which can be reached by a tunnel carved into the rock. Next to it is thoroughly shaped large arched altar niche - and below ground - the center of the mystery cult. At the foot of the temple have been discovered an ancient Thracian ceramics and VI century BC - III century AD silver coins. It is assumed that the underground galleries with shrines, altars and platforms may have concerning the cult of the deified hero Zalmoxis. The sanctuary can be reached by asphalt road. There is built infrastructure for tourism.
