Golyam Pelerik is located in the high share of the Western Rhodopes. It is the highest peak of the Rhodope Mountains and with its 2191 m ranks in seventh place among the Bulgarian mountains.
Perelik’s share covers the highest part of the Rhodope Mountains and forms part of the main ridge that divides the basin of the Arda River from the valley of Vacha River and Chepelare. On its head was out four of the largest water divide was in this part of the Rhodopes.
The whole array around the top is typical alpine plateau - broad, flat and grassed. Its ridge is part of the developments in the Western Rhodopes plateau, located at 1800-2100 meters altitude above which rise the almost flat humps of the highest peaks - Golyam Perelik (2191 meters), Malak Perelik (2147 m) Shirokolushki Snezhnik ( 2188 m) and others.
Golyam Perelik is included in the national movement "Conqueror of the mountains’ ten princes" as number seven, and close to the point near the tip passes a marked trail - part of the Bulgarian section of the European hiking route E-8.
Most tourists prefer to climb Golyam Perelik, starting from Smolyan. The road passes through the Prevala area, which is located seven kilometers from the town. From there the walk to the top of the transition takes about two hours.
At the very top is located a military base and it is inaccessible to visitors. However, since its slope also reveals very beautiful views, in clear days one can see Rozhen, Rila, Pirin, Stara Planina mountain, Mount Olympus in Greece and the Aegean Sea. Under the peak is situated the hut "Perelik", which provides shelter at any time of year. The transition from it to the peak takes about an hour.
In the northern slopes of Perelik is located the cave Lednitsata, length 1419 m. The cave is very cold and is dotted with formations of ice. Even in the hottest summer days they do not melt. At the foot of Perelik are the villages of Shiroka Luka, Raikovo and Ustovo that feature unique architecture and indispensable source of Rhodope folklore.
