Zlatograd is the most southern city of Bulgariaл There is located the Ethnographic Area Complex - the largest compact architectural reserve in the Rhodope Mountains, one of the masterpieces of the rapidly developing tourism in this region.
Not only architectural monuments were revived with love in the old city, but also old and forgotten crafts. With historical authenticity are reproduced small workshops: the pottery welcomes with the ringing of bells, not forged of copper, but sculpted from clay. Next to each other are cutlery and harness workshops where skilled craftsmen create unique patterns. Terziyski (sewing) workshop keeps curious objects and tools of the craft - sewing machines of more than 120 years, archaic set of irons, archival photographs, on which can be seen even the camelcades that reached Zlatograd in the XVIII and XIX century.
In the weaving workshop at the centennial horizontal loom are still made rugs, bags and pillows, and in gaytandzhiyski (textile) workshop visitors can see how wool is produced by old-fashioned technology.
In the goldsmith's workshop, in which now can be ordered antique jewelry, are kept incredibly beautiful jewelry pieces. The legend of Delyo haidutin comes to life because the shop shows authentic mold for casting bullets.
In each workshop, on a special boards are displayed authentic artifacts found in archaeological excavations. This keeps the thread between past and present.
Undoubtedly the most attractive sight of the Ethnographic complex is the Mill complex. Here can be seen authentic water facilities operating even today - nap, fulling-mill and others.
When you get tired of wandering through the picturesque streets of Zlatograd, you can try one of the traditional culinary specialties to the sound of Bulgarian bagpipes or try the famous Zlatograd coffee that is brewed on sand.
The ethnographic museum of Zlatograd is really interesting. Here archaeological finds are displayed dated back to the time of the Thracians and Romans, the Byzantines and early medieval Bulgaria. Here can be seen also tools for soil cultivation, different vessels and tools, objects associated with everyday life. Very high value has the collection of traditional clothing, especially the women's festive costumes typical of the Middle Rhodopes, the jewelry and ceremonial props, and the complete set of wedding dowry and colorful socks. In one of the rooms of the museum is mounted the only in Bulgaria working vertical loom creating large mats and blankets, and in the next room is a recreated the traditional Zlatograd furniture in the second half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
Do not forget to visit the school, opened in 1852 in the courtyard of the church "St. George", which is now converted into a Museum of Education in the Middle Rhodopes.
In Zlatograd even today is living the legend of Delyo haidutin, protector of the oppressed. People have created songs for his life and deeds, his love for the beautiful Gyulsyume. The most famous of them - "Izlel e Delyo haidutin ", performed by Valya Balkanska, was sent into space in 1977.
Zlatograd is a natural center of the cultural tourism in the region. As such, it is a convenient starting point to visit Perperikon, Tatul, objects in the Smolyan region, as well as those in Greece - the relief of the god Mithra in the village Thermes, the old city of Xanthi with its museums, the archaeological museum in Avdira.
