Erma Gorge, 4 km from the town of Tran, is also known as Lomnishkoto Gorge, named after the nearby village Lomnica. This landmark is the result of millennial work of the river that cut a deep gorge in the limestone rocks.
In 1961 to preserve natural ecosystems, biodiversity, habitats of rare and endangered species and spectacular scenery, the gorge was declared a natural monument and protected area.
Against each other on both banks of the river rose two rocks, about 200 meters high. They bear the names Zhilav kamak and Manastirishte (or Tsarkvishteto). To the delight of adventurers there are passed more than ten alpine climbing routes with a different category of difficulty. In the lowest part, to the level of the river, the distance between the two rocks is reaching only 3-4 m. In this narrow channel is formed and a 4-foot waterfall and along the river there are many rocks, karst cave entrances, cascades and waterfalls. Just above this section is hanging wooden bridge and the view from the eco-trail is unique.
There is a romantic and sad story about the emergence of the two rocks that many years ago were actually boy and girl in love. The young man was poor, but the girl - from a wealthy family and her parents did not approve of their love. They fled together, but the girl's mother cursed them and they were petrified and separated forever. Of their tears was born Erma river.
There are several theories about the nature of the name of the river. According to Konstantin Irechek it came from St. Tarapontiy who inhabited hole in the rock in the area. His story is contained in the Paisii Hilendarski’s "Slav-Bulgarian History". St. Tarapontiy lived in Lydia during the reign of Valerian and was a priest in the city of Sardis. His name in Church Slavonic language was transformed into Yerme after the name of Hermes river in Lydia. Locals began to call him Erme and then named the river after him.
There are two roads to the picturesque gorge of Erma. You can go through artificially dug tunnel on the right bank and view it from there. The view is impressive, especially at sunset. Another option is to take the Tran ecotrail, which after 3 kilometers can take you to the village of Bankya. The most interesting and attractive objects on the path are the two gorges - erma Gorge and the gorge on river Yablanishka. The climate is characterized by cold winters and cool summers, the air is crystal clear, the nature - magnificent. The view is breathtaking with its impressive rock formations, sparkling waterfalls and water thresholds create excellent conditions for mountain tourism.
Erma river springs from the Vlasina mountain near the village Klisura in Serbia. It is small, with an average annual flow of 2-3 cubic meters/sec. and a length of 65 km. of which only 25 are in Bulgaria. The river enters the country at the village Strezimirovtsi, passes through Tran and then passes Lomnishkoto Gorge, to join the River Nisava. At the territory of Serbia, the river forms one of the most majestic and beautiful gorges across Eastern Europe - Poganovsko Gorge.
In his travelogue, "What? Switzerland ?!..." Aleko Konstantinov gives a special place precisely to the Erma River Gorge. Near the gorge is located the "Erma" hut. Tran is just 75 km from Sofia. For several years out here are conducted climbing competitions and the place is a favorite of the climbing clubs in the country.
