Dobarsko village

According to an old legend Dobarsko was created from part of the blinded soldiers of Tsar Samuil. After the battle at Klyuch in 1014, they founded the village because of the local healing springs. The village is situated 17 km away from Razlog and is known for its mineral springs and a little church, which, however, has significant historical, cultural and spiritual significance. The church is named "St. St. Theodore Tyron and Theodore Stratilat ".

Built and painted in 1614, it is long eight and a half meters, wide - seven meters, and its height is only five meters. The church has a double-pitched roof, according to the Ottoman law in the XVII century. But the masters boldly carved two crosses on its facade, and a swastika in one of the blocks. This symbol of the sun and well-being is of ancient origin, and according to researchers came here with the first Bulgarian settlers in the VII century.

Almost all the inscriptions on the frescoes are in Bulgarian, although the official church institutions at that time used Greek language. Two of the frescoes in the church deserve particular attention. In the scene "Transfiguration", Jesus Christ flew to the sky with something shaped like a modern rocket. After the writings of the Swiss writer Erich von Dineken, many supporters of the hypothesis of extraterrestrial visits tend to take them as pure truth, and even think to different even streams of jet engines in this fresco. Such images exist in several Bulgarian churches of that era.

There is unusual internal division of the church: instead of traditional nave church, builders build it as a complex three-aisled basilica, characteristic of the First Bulgarian Empire (IX - XI century). Archaeologists consider this as evidence that in the XVII century the builders were actually recovering an old building, built in the same place at the time of Prince Boris I, Tsar Simeon the Great or Tsar Samuil, when the region was permanently in the territory of Bulgaria.

Images, 460 in number, occupy every square inch and are extremely well preserved thanks to the smoke from the candles, though during the XIX century the Turks turned the church in a hammam.

Many of the frescoes are evidence of the patriotic feelings of their creators. Depicted is even died for the faith only a few decades ago, St. George the New of Sofia. It is noticeable also that the soldiers in a number of scenes bear Western weapons - halberds, helmets, and the ships are Venetian galleys - apparently resonance of the famous naval battle of Lepanto in 1571, where three quarters of the crews and soldiers of the Venetian fleet were Orthodox Bulgarians , Greeks and Serbs.

Mural depicts the donors of the church Hasina, Bogdan and Spas, as well as the builders Stanko, Smilen and Spas. Depicted are a number of Catholic saints, among them the Roman Pope Sylvester. St. Cyril of Alexandria is replaced by St. Cyril the Philosopher - creator of the Cyrillic alphabet.

All this makes the church in Dobarsko one of the most precious pearls of the Bulgarian National Revival architecture. The church is unique in Bulgaria. It was declared a cultural monument by UNESCO.

In Dobarsko archeologists recently found remains of Roman settlement of the III century. For the first time the village was mentioned in 1378 in the “Rila charter” of King Ivan Shishman. Near the village is another church, built in 1860. Dobarsko is associated with the legend of the Dobarsko renowned music school for blind children, created by the same blinded soldiers of Tsar Samuil.
