Bratsigovo History Museum

The historical museum is located in the old part of Bratsigovo and is the center of the museum complex that includes the home of Vasil Petleshkov, the exposure of the Bratsigovo building school during the National Revival and the ethnographic exhibition.

In Popovata house, built in 1847 by the brothers Michail Popov and Zafir Popov, visitors can learn interesting facts about the architectural and construction school during the Revival, dedicated to the famous Bratzigovo builders. Below are photos of the curious life, tools and official chronicles (the guild’s lawbook in the town) and “Meshtrovskiya” dictionary consisting of 700 words - a secret language with which the local builders called tools and objects to preserve the secret of their craft.

According to a legend, Kolyo Ficheto came to Bratsigovo to study the craft and even to marry the daughter of one of the masters of the guild. And when taken to the construction of the bridge over the river Osam in Lovech, he sought and received help from Bratsigovo’s guild of masonry.

Another valuable architectural monument in Bratsigovo is the Damova house, built in 1835. It is a complex of residential and agricultural buildings. The attention is attracted bi its preserved rose distillery. The local climate is mild and has provided good conditions for growing oil roses - livelihood, which today is reborn again.

The historical museum was created in 1926 by a group of teachers who opened a modest exhibit in the old community center. Today, the most numerous museum exhibits there are related to the revolutionary struggles of the local population. Here are the flag sewn by Anna Gizdova, original wooden cannon, bible, knife and revolver on which the rebels swore, and many objects that belonged to Bratsigovo hero Vassil Petleshkov. Today at his house, built in 1872 by Master Ivan Boyanov, is housed the city art gallery.

On the eve of the Rebellion from 14 to 16 April, leaders of the IV Revolutionary District convened in the historical area Oborishte. Vasil Petleshkov was present, elected as chairman of the committee that should develop a military plan in the district and create an appeal to the local people. Petleshkov declared the uprising at "Sindzhirli bunar" - town square surrounded by houses. Under the crafted by Anna Gizdova flag gathered 1333 rebels from seven villages. They have six cherry cannons, 463 rifles and 817 pistols. Seventeen days they were intoxicated by the freedom and enjoyed their victory over the Turkish local militia, which failed to break their resistance.

Bratsigovo gave many casualties compared to other cities that rebelled and credit for this is largely due to Vasil Petleshkov, which end was tragic. Betrayed by his stepfather, he swallowed poison prepared in advance in order not to fall alive into the hands of the Turks, but it didn’t work immediately. He was taken to the pasha already dazed and blackened and put in between two fires. With incredible courage he uttered the words that remained forever in the Bulgarian history: "I am alone, there are no others. I led, I commanded, look for no other."
