Bourgas

In ancient times Bourgas was a small Roman city that bore the name Deltum. During the Middle Ages a small fortress was built - Pyrgos, which was used as a watchtower, and in the XVII century the town received its present name. But then nobody could even suspect what a bright future awaits him. Most of its development contributes to its convenient port, and the existence of the three lakes near the city - Atanasov, Burgasko and Mandrensko.

One of the main symbols of Burgas undoubtedly is the church "St. Cyril and Methodius ", the oldest Christian monastery in the city. Its foundations were laid in 1895 but was completed in 1907 building - a three-nave basilica, built of green Aytos stone, marble and brick, it impresses with its magnificent facade.

No less impressive is its internal decoration. Five marble arches seem to divide it into two. The iconostasis was built in 1930 by master carpenter Krum Kosharevski, magnificent frescoes and icons as the wonderful "St. Seven Saints "," St. Mary "," Saint John of Rila the Miracle Worker "and many others, most of which were donated to the temple. Unfortunately a fire in 1953 damaged many of these precious works, and only in 2008, at the holiday of the cathedral - May 11, the renewed church finally opened again.

Another landmark of Bourgas, which you should not miss is the Ethnographic Museum. It is located close to the cathedral and is set in one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in town built in the late XIX century. Permanent exhibition of the museum is located on two floors. On the first floor there are costumes and furniture of the XIX and XX century, popular both in Bulgaria and in Europe. On the second floor are accessible traditional costumes and household items. Of particular interest is a collection of ritual costumes.

Not everyone knows that Bourgas is one of the few cities in Europe, located right on the migratory route of birds - "Via Pontica". For example: in the autumn in Bourgas, more than 200,000 storks gather before flying south. There is a protected area in south of the city – the region “Poda”, where on an area of 100 hectares have been established 259 bird species - an extraordinary biological wealth. So in 1997 the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and the Bulgarian-Swiss Biodiversity program built just before Kraimorie, left of the road Bourgas-Sozopol, conservation center with the same name - "Poda".

The center is fast becoming an attractive place for many nature lovers from the country and abroad for its activities. Environmentalists mark boundaries and restrict uncontrolled access, build artificial islands, nests and shelters to attract rare species, heal injured birds, organize competitions for students in ornithology, issue pamphlets with an ecological theme and newsletter. Here everyone is welcome and can learn many valuable and important facts about the state of biodiversity in Bulgaria. On the highest terrace of the center can be observed unique variety of birds, but for the curious routes are available that allow to look closely at the everyday life of rare birds, mammals and reptiles. Each year the center is becoming more popular and the number of visitors is constantly growing.
