In the middle of Central Stara Planina in the Kalofer part like a huge dome rises Botev Peak. Seen from his foot, it looks like a giant fist.
Botev Peak has a height of 2376 meters. It is the highest peak of Stara Planina and the third highest in Bulgaria - after Musala in Rila and Vihren in Pirin. From the north it outlines the majestic, scary and fascinating depths of the North Djendem. Among the chaos of rocks and steep cliffs tens of streams form a continuous string of waterfalls and spraying.
From south vertiginous cliffs surround the Botev Peak and outline the South Djendem. To the eest and east the peak is lowered to two saddles - Duza and Marinka. On both sides as beads the lower peaks are lined.
In its raw climate Botev peak can be matched only with Musala. The average annual temperature at the top is -6 degrees Celsius and the absolute minimum temperature is -28 degrees.
Botev Peak was uninhabited and wild for centuries. In its bosom were hiding from Ottoman invaders many local outlaws and revolutionaries. Over the top, back in 1867 passed the PAnayot Khitov detachment, led by green flag worn by Vasil Levski.
After the Liberation of Bulgaria those who love the beauty of the Balkan Mountains started to visit the peak. After some time - in 1942 the third meteorological station based in Bulgaria and the second highest alpine station was opened at the peak.
Botev Peak occupies an middle position within the national park "Central Balkan", part of the Central Stara Planina. On the slopes of the peak there are drifts, forming mountain streams and waterfalls, known as “pruskalki” (“sprinkles”). The greatest of them is Praskaloto - the highest waterfall in the country (124 meters), located on the southern slope above the "Rai" (“Paradise”) hut.
The summit can be reached in several ways. From Kalofer to the alpine village leads a road 42 km in length. A trail passes through the hut "Paradise" and reaches the top. The route can be traveled for seven hours. Botev Peak can be reached from the east for four hours, passing through the hut "Taja". Easy transition starts in the north town of Apriltsi, through the hut "Pleven" and the "Botev" shelter. A very popular way to the peak starts from Karlovo and passes the huts "Hubavets", "Balkan roses" and "Vasil Levski". The route takes ten hours.
The shortest passage to the top is the so-called Tarzan trail, traced in 1941 from the meteorologist and mountaineer Todor Bozhkov.
