The picturesque town of Balchik is located 23 miles from Dobrich and 29 miles from the biggest coastal town in Bulgaria- Varna. From the period between 1913 and 1940, the town was under Romanian rule and it was at that time when it obtained one of its most characteristic features. During this rule, Queen Maria of Romania was enthralled by the town’s charm and ordered the building of a Palace where she could spend her days of recreation. The palace is built in a typical oriental style and it is accompanied by a minaret as a symbol of the Muslim faith of one of the Queen’s friends.
