Bacho Kiro Cave

In the region of Dryanovo Monastery, near the canyons of Andaka and Dryanovska rivers is the location of the first electrified cave in Bulgaria. The cave was turned into local tourist attraction since 1937. Three years later it was called "Bacho Kiro" in honor of the hero of the April Uprising.

"Bacho Kiro" is one of the most popular caves in Bulgaria. It is believed that it is formed by the flow of an underground river. Its total length is 3600 meters. After entering the cave tourists find themselves in the "Antechamber", in which were found tools from the Upper Paleolithic. The room’s height reaches up to 20 meters. The first expedition set foot in the "Antechamber" in 1890.

The cave is very beautiful, it has many stalactites, stalagmites and stalactones in different shapes resembling people, animals and various scenes. Constant temperature of the cave is 13 degrees Celsius.

The cave complex is a four-storey labyrinth of galleries and branches, 3600 m long. For visitors there is electrified part of 700 m that is formed in three main directions (east, northeast and southeast) by the underground rivers flowing into limestone, formed at the bottom of warm sea. Geomorphological studies give reason to believe that the formation of the cave lasted about 2 million years. Its formation is closely linked with the development of river Dryanovska and its influx Andaka.

Modern and effective lighting allows numerous tourists to enjoy the cave’s formations with romantic names like "Rain Room", "Stone Flower", "Poplar" and "Lake of Happiness", "Medusa", "Bear Slide", "Sword Meadow", "Lonesome Stalactone", "Hall of Pop Hariton" and others. During the Ottoman rule the local people were scared of the ghosts, spirits and the dragons living in the cave. Such legends are still preserved.

Be sure to crawl through the "Purgatory" - a hole in the wall of the cave, which the locals believe that purifies the sins of the people who pass through it.

Near the cave is the scenic Dryanovska trail. From the cave you can get to the Dryanovo Monastery for approximately ten minutes. In 1962 the cave was declared a landmark. There are guides available. The cave is open to visitors throughout the year without interruption, the adult ticket costs $ 2 for the shorter route and 4 euro for the longer.
